With retail stores distributed within a European country, our client faced the challenge of\u00a0optimizing profitability while maintaining operational stability. Opening or relocating\u00a0stores comes with significant costs, so each decision needed to be backed by robust\u00a0data analysis. The objective was to enhance the overall profitability and market\u00a0relevance of the store portfolio by strategically optimizing locations through various\u00a0actions including closures, relocations, and expansions.<\/p>\n

Our Approach<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n

To address this challenge, our team implemented a structured approach involving data\u00a0wrangling, exploratory data analysis, and advanced machine learning techniques.<\/p>\n

Data Wrangling and Cleaning<\/h3>\n<\/p>\n

We began by cleaning and organizing the data to ensure accuracy and consistency. This\u00a0step included handling missing values, standardizing formats, and preparing datasets\u00a0for analysis.<\/p>\n

Exploratory Data Analysis (EDA)<\/h3>\n<\/p>\n

EDA provided critical insights into the relationships between various store attributes and\u00a0performance indicators. Techniques such as correlation matrices, heatmaps, scatter\u00a0plots, and moving average analyses helped us identify patterns and trends. For example,\u00a0we discovered correlations between store locations, customer demographics, and\u00a0revenue performance.<\/p>\n

Machine Learning Models<\/h3>\n<\/p>\n

Using Python and the scikit-learn library, we developed two machine learning models:<\/p>\n

  1. Shop Model: Focused on individual store performance, identifying factors such as customer footfall, revenue, and local competition.<\/li>\n
  2. Market Model: Assessed regional potential, incorporating attributes like population density, market demographics, and competitor presence.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    The Random Forest Regressor, a robust algorithm for handling complex datasets, was used to identify key performance drivers. This approach allowed us to evaluate\u00a0hundreds of attributes, refining them to the most impactful variables. Metrics such as\u00a0Mean Squared Error (MSE) and R-squared values ensured the models\u2019 accuracy and\u00a0reliability.<\/p>\n

    Our analysis provided the client with a clear roadmap for action:<\/p>\n

    • Store Closures: Identified underperforming stores where operational costs\u00a0outweighed benefits.<\/li>\n
    • Staffing Adjustments: Recommended optimizing staff levels to align with\u00a0customer demand.<\/li>\n
    • Relocations: Pinpointed high-potential areas for relocating stores to improve\u00a0accessibility and profitability.<\/li>\n
    • Growth Opportunities: Highlighted regions with untapped potential for\u00a0expansion.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      Throughout the project, data privacy and security were our top priorities. Customer data\u00a0was anonymized to protect individual identities, and all datasets were stored on secure\u00a0servers with restricted access. These measures ensured full compliance with GDPR and\u00a0other relevant regulations.<\/p>\n
